News: GCA Annual Conference to Convene in Baltimore

April 24, 2017

Baltimore, MD -- From May 4-7, 2017, delegates from member clubs around the country will convene in Baltimore at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel for The Garden Club of America’s 104th annual meeting. Nearly 600 registered attendees are expected for three days of distinguished speakers, educational presentations, leadership reports, tours, workshops and a culminating awards dinner.

National awards will be presented to 10 individuals and organizations in a private ceremony, honoring them for their distinguished accomplishments in horticulture, conservation, historic preservation, and floral design. Check back May 4th to learn more about the honorees.

Two special events are open to the public and free of charge: Boutique and Flower Show

The Flower Show, Maryland in May will feature award-winning floral design, botanical arts, horticulture and photography. Visitors can also see special exhibits on conservation and garden history and design. One exhibit focuses on Baltimore resident, Eleanor Weller Reade, who was instrumental in creating the Archives of American Gardens at the Smithsonian Institution. Mrs. Reade received the 2005 Garden Club of America National Historic Preservation Medal in honor of her efforts.

The Archives is a major horticultural collection whose core images and slides were made possible by a gift from The Garden Club of America in 1992. The Collection reassembles in one place glass lantern slides of gardens taken during the 1920s and 1930s as well as many 35 mm slides. The glass slides – literally two pieces of glass held together by resin and painted by hand – were the first garden “photographs.” They offer incomparable documentation of gardens, many long since lost to the ravages of time and limited resources.

The Star Spangled Boutique will feature 23 vendors from around the country offering clothing, jewelry, accessories and gifts -- in all price ranges. The boutique and flower show will be open to the public at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel:

          Friday, May 5, 12 noon – 6 p.m.

          Saturday, May 6 – 12 noon to 3 p.m.

          Grand Salon Ballroom

The Hotel is located at 700 Alieceanna Street, Baltimore.
