Restoring Native Habitat to Attract Pollinators and Increase Biodiversity

Starting in September 2016, the Village Garden Club of Sewickley partnered with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania to identify rare, medicinal, endangered, or other plants of interest in a selected section of the Audubon Greenway, a land conservation initiative of the Allegheny Land Trust that ultimately will include more than 1,500 acres linking four municipal parks in the Little Sewickley Creek Watershed.  

Club members analyzed and documented existing plants in the restoration area, eradicated invasive multiflora rose and bittersweet, collected native seeds, prepared seed balls, and worked with local Girl Scouts to help scatter seeds of aster meadow plant, boneset, summer phlox, and coreopsis.  In addition, the club offered a free community workshop for youth and their parents, covering how to create a pollinator-friendly landscape.  Attendees planted native seeds to grow in their own gardens.
