GCA Club Members Honored by Audubon New York

Susan Payson Burke and her husband, Coleman, were honored with the 2017 Thomas W. Keesee Jr. Conservation Award. The couple recently established the National Audubon Society’s Coleman and Susan Burke Center for Native Plants, which promotes the use of native plants benefitting birds and connects communities with information and resources to grow more native plants and develop innovative native plant projects. Mrs. Burke is a member of the Bedford Garden Club and the Nantucket Garden Club, member clubs of the GCA.

Receiving Audubon New York’s Special Recognition was Patricia Hartford Keesee, honored for pioneering work in the fields of conservation and land preservation. Mrs. Keesee has held numerous leadership roles with the GCA; the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and its national affiliate, The Native Plant Center at Westchester Community College; The Nature Conservancy; and the Federated Conservationists of Westchester County.  Mrs. Keesee is a member of the Bedford, New York-based, Rusticus Garden Club of the GCA. The Thomas W. Keesee Jr. Conservation Award is named for her late husband.

Also at the awards luncheon, Sheila Brady, fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, received a 2017 Thomas W. Keesee Jr. Conservation Award for  leadership and innovation in the field of sustainable design. Author and conservationist Terry Tempest Williams received the 2017 Audubon New York Award for Environmental Writing.
