The Garden Club of America held its 2018 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California in April. Experience the remarkable insights of our opening, keynote and scholarship speakers: Sam Hodder - CEO of Save the Redwoods League, Jonathan Foley - ED of the California Academy of Sciences, and Joanna Nelson, PhD and GCA Coastal Wetlands Studies scholarship recipient.

 

Sam Hodder is the president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring California’s redwood forests and connecting people with their peace and beauty.

 
 

Thomas Woltz is one of America’s most renowned landscape architects. He is currently leading his firm, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, in the design of nine public parks across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. In his 20 years of practice, Woltz has forged a body of work that integrates the beauty and function of built forms with an understanding of complex biological systems and restoration ecology.

 
 

Jonathan Foley is the Executive Director of the California Academy of Sciences, a world-renowned scientific and educational institution dedicated to exploring, explaining and sustaining life on Earth. Located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the Academy has a world-class aquarium, planetarium, and natural history museum, as well as innovative programs in scientific research and education.

 
 

Joanna Nelson, PhD, received The Garden Club of America’s Award in Coastal Wetlands Studies in 2009. She has 20 years of experience researching freshwater, estuarine, and coastal-ocean habitats and creating environmental solutions for conservation, resilience, and the well-being of humans and nature. Working at the interface of science and policy, she founded LandSea Science, a research and consulting firm, in 2016.
