The GCA Zone VI Fellowship
in Urban Forestry

FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS AND ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES

Purpose: To advance the field of urban forestry by encouraging students to study the planning, management, and horticulture of urban forests and the effect of healthy urban forests on the environment.

History: In 2004, GCA Zone VI hosted the Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, chaired by Dede Petri and Diana Boyce. The twelve clubs of Zone VI voted to create a fellowship in urban forestry with unexpected money generated by their zone. Zone VI, which includes Maryland and the District of Columbia, has a history of interest in the health of the urban forest. A generous donation from the Eugene B. Casey foundation, which seeks to restore, enhance, and protect the tree canopy of the nation’s capital, combined with GCA monies to create the fellowship, which was first awarded in 2005.

Provisions: Funds one or more students annually at $4000 for study and research that will advance the knowledge of urban forestry and increase the number of scientists in the field. A recipient may reapply for an additional year.

Eligibility: Open to graduate or advanced undergraduate students in environmental studies, horticulture, forestry, and related courses of study with a special interest in the urban forest. Students must be enrolled during the academic year following the award.

To Apply: See application and information. Applications must be received at the Virginia Tech Department of Forest Resources & Environmental Conservation by January 31 of the period preceding study. PLEASE NOTE: ONLY ONE GCA SCHOLARSHIP, FELLOWSHIP OR AWARD MAY BE APPLIED FOR ANNUALLY.

Selection: Selection is by a panel appointed by the Department of Forest Resources & Environmental Conservation, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and is approved by the GCA Scholarship Committee.

Fund: The GCA Zone VI Fellowship in Urban Forestry Fund is managed by the GCA.
