Peter Faneuil House Garden Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill Garden Club, Zone I

1996 Founders Fund Winner

Peter Faneuil House, built in 1910 and named after one of Boston’s most prominent colonial era philanthropists, served as an elementary school for Beacon Hill children for much of the 20th century. In 1994, state and federal funding ran out for the High School program being run then and the building was sold to non-profit organizations specializing in housing for elderly and low-income men and women. That year, Peter Faneuil House was also added to the National Register for Historic Places.

The 1996 Founders Fund Award went to complete the project begun two years prior by the Beacon Hill Garden Club turning the old tarmac playground into a garden by placing anchor plants and annual and perennial beds throughout the 4,860 square foot space. The implementation of the garden also included an educational component teaching the residents and neighbors garden maintenance skills. Considered an urban oasis, Peter Faneuil House Garden is a welcome respite from downtown Boston crowds.

The Beacon Hill Garden Club continues to support the thriving Peter Faneuil House Garden by planting bulbs, geraniums and daylillies as well as decorating with greens for the Holidays. Club members serve a minimum of two 2-hour shifts working in the garden. Continuing maintenance is supported by funds from revenues from the Beacon Hill Garden Club’s yearly Hidden Gardens Tour.
