Rooftop Therapy Park Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center
The Knoxville Garden Club, Zone IX
1993 Founders Fund Winner
Since opening in 1978, the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center has been East Tennessee’s recognized leader in rehabilitating stroke, spinal cord and brain injury patients. It is named in honor of Knoxville’s own Academy Award winning actress Patricia Neal (1926- 2010) who suffered a devastating series of strokes leaving her partially paralyzed at the age of 39. Undaunted, she began a successful struggle through years of rehabilitation.
The 1993 Founders Fund Award provided plantings for the “View From The Top” 13,000 square foot Rooftop Therapy Park. This protected outdoor space provides patients with a place of leisure and relaxation as well as offers them a training tool to master mobility and other skills. It offers a garden, water, sculpture and rest areas in a setting where patients can practice navigating real world conditions such as cement, gravel, concrete and curbs.
For hundreds of patients at a time, the Patricia Neal Rehab Center is restoring abilities and rebuilding lives. The horticultural area of the Rooftop Therapy Park provides an essential element to recovery
