Norman Bird Sanctuary

Newport Garden Club, Zone II

1987 Founders Fund Winner

The Norman Bird Sanctuary is a 325 acre private wildlife preserve on Aquidneck Island featuring field, woodland, pond and stream habitats. The refuge was established in 1949 as part of a trust bequeathed by Mabel Norman Cerio. Her instructions left that the land was to be maintained “for the propagation, preservation and protection of birds and where birds and bird life may be observed, studied and enjoyed by lovers of nature and by the public generally so interested in a spirit of humanity and mercy.”

The 1987 Founders Fund Award was given to fabricate and install exhibits as part of an interpretive museum in the loft area of an 18th century barn at the entrance of the sanctuary. The exhibits were designed to interpret the outdoor living museum and laid out to reflect seven miles of walking trail progression.

The Norman Bird Sanctuary works to increase environmental literacy through a variety of programs for all. Offerings from the Sanctuary’s professional teaching staff include school aged programs, scout badge achievement opportunities, summer camps and many more programs dedicated to sharing the world of nature with learners of all ages. Recently the Paradise Farmhouse in which Mabel Norman lived was brought back to life with a complete renovation and installation of modern amenities. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Paradise Farmhouse is now a retreat and event center which offers guests overnight accommodations.
