Andy Larsen
Recipient of the Elizabeth Abernathy Hull Award, 1994
Andy Larsen, heartbeat of Riveredge has made the Nature Center a model for Wisconsin, perhaps for our country. Over a quarter century has passed since that prickly young man arrived fresh from the Peace Corps, determined to make better sense of environmental education for children. Very soon the Riveredge Board realized that they has hired a fine, gifted, disciplined,strong-minded, hands-on... one helluva teacher. They then stood aside and allowed Andy Larsen to pioneer teaching methods. His intelligence and foresight put his program in the vanguard. For the first year after Andy came, there were no school children exploring the area. He used the time to prepare his dramatic, unique program and to educate and train some volunteers. He is a real pro, always ahead of the game. He knows his business as he brings excitement and love of the world to all who are trained and aimed by him. He makes learning fascinating, palatable, and clear. Zone XI
