Murray Park
Little Rock Garden Club, Zone IX
05/01/2024
Murray Park is a large urban park within the City of Little Rock Parks and Recreation Department. This 166-acre park is leased to the City of Little Rock by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A large diverse group of citizens enjoy the many facilities the park has to offer every day of the year. In 2006 the Little Rock Garden Club partnered with the City of Little Rock to beautify the Scenic River Walk adjacent to Murray Lock and Dam. This site is immediately adjoining Murray Park, but was devastated by the catastrophic tornado in Little Rock on March 31, 2023. The tornado was on the ground for over 40 minutes covering 32 miles with a peak width of approximately one-half mile causing never before seen devastation across the city.
The Restoration Initiative grant will allow Little Rock Garden Club and the City of Little Rock’s Parks and Recreation Department to purchase, plant and maintain approximately 25 new trees. The partial matching funds of $1500 by the Little Rock Garden Club will provide as many as 5 more trees for the park. Along with the City of Little Rock Parks and Rec. Department, the LRGC will help educate the public on the importance of planting trees to aid in reforestation, conservation and combat climate change.
