Ford Park is one of 17 community parks located in the City of Shreveport. One of the largest parks in Shreveport at 85 acres, Ford Park is one of the top three-most visited parks in the City with its walking trail, frisbee golf course, fishing pier, two ball fields and pavilions for special events and celebrations. Although the Shreveport Garden Study Club (SGSC) has partnered with the City of Shreveport for over 25 years, it’s the first time SGSC will work with Ford Park.
On June 16, 2023, a catastrophic storm raged across North Louisiana destroying hundreds of trees in Shreveport and throughout Caddo Parish. Shortleaf pine trees took the brunt of the storm with hundreds falling in community parks alone. Some 27 trees were destroyed in Ford Park, along with limbs ripped off or left dangling from many more. Because of the devastation, several north Louisiana parishes including Caddo Parish– in which Shreveport is located–were declared disaster areas.
Restoration Initiative Grant funds will be spent on removing the nine root balls and stumps and preparing the sites for replacement trees. Shreveport Garden Study Club has committed up to $1,000 for the purchase of replacement trees through Shreveport Green, which along with the City of Shreveport will provide planting and maintenance.
