Sankofa Garden

The Little Garden Club of Memphis

The Little Garden Club of Memphis will add a Sankofa Garden, a living tribute to the rich agricultural traditions and wisdom of the African diaspora to the Carpenter Art Garden (CAG).  The CAG is located in Binghampton, one of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Memphis, TN.  The word Sankofa comes from the Akan people of Ghana. It symbolizes the concept of looking back to retrieve valuable knowledge from the past to move forward into the future. The garden would embody this philosophy by embracing ancient techniques and cultivating vegetation that has deep roots in African heritage.

The Sankofa Garden will feature a diverse array of plants, herbs, and crops that have been historically grown and used within Africa and African diaspora communities and also serve as a beautiful learning space and a source of fresh produce.  With this new project, the club aims to educate and connect the community with the cultural and historical significance of these plants, while also promoting sustainable and traditional gardening practices.
