Monadnock Garden Club 100 Years/100 Native Plants

Monadnock Garden Club, Zone I

04/01/2025

The Spalding Nature Trail Project aims to enhance biodiversity and wildlife habitat through a strategic restoration of native understory vegetation within a mature red oak, beech, white pine forest. Working along a historic bridle path bordered by traditional New England stone walls, we will establish a series of carefully designed native plant communities incorporating native trees, shrubs and herbbaceous species. Each grouping will be designed to provide year-round resources for birds and other wildlife while demonstrating the beauty and ecological value of native plant communities. The project’s location adjacent to Mt Monadnock, the second most climbed mountain in the world, offers an exceptional opportunity for public education about forest ecology and native plant conservation.

This project aligns with both historical preservation and modern conservation needs. As the Monadnock Garden Club celebrates our centennial year, this project represents a return to the club’s founding mission of creating a native plant sanctuary on this Society for the Protection of New Hampshire forest property.
