Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve Sensory Garden

Garden Club of Somerset Hills, Zone IV

04/01/2025

Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) seeks funding from the Garden Club of America’s Partners for Plants Grant to enhance our Sensory Garden with a diverse selection of native pollinator, edible, and medicinal plants. This initiative aligns with our mission to promote ecological stewardship, provide accessible green spaces, and educate the community about the value of native plants. The Sensory Garden, located on our publicly-accessible Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, is designed to be fully accessible to individuals with disabilities and offers a rich, interactive experience that fosters mental well- being, horticultural learning, and deeper connections with nature.

The grant will support the purchase and planting of a carefully selected variety of native species, ensuring year-round interest and ecological benefits. RHA staff, including horticultural experts such as our Director of Science, Director of Education, Stewardship Manager, and Educator Team will create a site plan and lead planting days and educational workshops; our robust team of volunteers, including support from the Garden Club of Somerset Hills, will contribute to planting efforts and ongoing maintenance of the garden including weeding and watering. Watering and maintenance will be managed by RHA staff and volunteers. Twice a week throughout the year, RHA hosts groups of special ed students from local high schools. Under the direction of RHA Director of Education Lauren Theis, these volunteers will water plants throughout the growing season. RHA Stewardship Manager Ed Whitehead will monitor the plantings, continue invasive plant removal, weeding, and other maintenance required. Informative signage will be installed to highlight plant species, their benefits, and their role in a sustainable ecosystem.
