Rocky Swale Restoration

St. George's Garden Club, Zone VI

03/26/2019
Cylburn Arboretum, Baltimore, MD

This project combines the goals of conservation and community service. The project involves the removal of the invasive species that have overrun the “rocky swale” adjacent to the Cylburn Arboretum main entrance road and to rehabilitate the area by planting shrubs, perennials, ferns and ground covers native to the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont. Active participation by St. George’s Garden Club
members in both the original planting and in the follow up maintenance and attention to the area engage members in valuable community service. (A second phase of the project would include installation of an Observation Platform, with signage and educational information, funds will be raised by outside sources for the second phase) Two years of follow up maintenance are included in the plan. This project fosters a relationship between St. Georges Garden Club and the Cylburn Arboretum friends group, who will collaborate to assure the stewardship of the area as an important and prominent part of the Arboretum
