Enthusiastic horticulturist and conservationist, a dirt gardener, Eliot's professional career was as Executive Director of the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland and The Holden Arboretum in Ohio for 25 years. He is now Director Emeritus of the Holden.

Former Chairman of the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) and a former board member of the Student Conservation Association (SCA) for 21 years. He has served on many advisory committees for national horticultural organizations.
Recipient of the Professional Award of the American Horticultural Society (AHS) and Honorary Life Member Award of the American Public Gardens Association (APGA).
