Bill Welch received a Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture and later a doctorate in Horticulture and Extension Education from Louisiana State University. Since 1972, he has served as Professor of Horticulture and currently works for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A & M. He is Past President and Honorary Board Member of The Southern Garden History Society.
Bill's book Perennial Garden Color has been a national bestseller and pioneered the use of perennials in Southern gardens. He has written or co-authored several other books, including Antique Roses for the South, Heirloom Gardening in the South, and The Bountiful Flower Garden. Bill co-authored with Chris Wiesinger, The Bulb Hunter 2013, co-authored with Greg Grant, 2013 Heirloom Gardening in the South and The Rose Rustlers 2017.
Recently awarded the title of Professor and Extension Landscape Horticulturist Emeritus Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service by The Board of Regents The Texas A&M University System.
Winner of the 2008 Distinguished Service Medal
Honorary Member since 1993.
