Carrol L. Henderson
Carrol L. Henderson
2016 Frances K. Hutchinson Medal
In recognition of his successful advocacy for restoration of Minnesota’s nongame wildlife species and habitats, as well as his long-standing collaboration with individuals and organizations in critical stewardship practices.
Proposed by: Saint Paul Garden Club, Zone XI
Carrol as the original supervisor has won an acknowledged reputation in strategic restoration of diverse natural species and habitats beyond geo-political borders. He has managed programs to save eastern bluebirds, river otters, and landmark trumpeter swans, a story of notable resettlement in the lower 48 states. Carrol is most famous for launching a ‘Chickadee Checkoff,’ a tax filing option that funds surveys of wood turtles, ospreys, rattlesnakes and dragonflies, frog and toad research, monitoring heron rookeries, remote cameras, protection and management of bald eagles, piping plovers, peregrine falcons and others injured or at risk. Of Carrol’s fourteen published books, and long before ‘pollinators’ became a “buzzword,” Carrol advocated landscape plantings to benefit butterflies, bees, moths, and hummingbirds in his book, “Landscaping for Wildlife.” Royalties of over ¼ million from all DNR books are returned to programs.
The Frances K. Hutchinson Medal is awarded to figures of national importance for distinguished service to conservation.
The Francis K. Hutchinson Medal was endowed by the Lake Geneva Garden Club, Zone XI, in memory of its founder, Francis Kinsley Hutchinson (Mrs. Charles Lawrence Hutchinson: 1857–1936) who was an avid horticulturist, naturalist, and conservationist. At her home, Wychwood, Frances created a 73-acre woodland sanctuary, which she donated to the University of Chicago and which served as a resource for scientific study for faculty and students until the trust ended and the property was subsequently subdivided. She was the author of the Wychwood country home trilogy on the natural history of the Lake Geneva region. She was president of the Wildflower Preservation Society, Illinois Chapter. The medal was designed by Spaulding-Gorham, Inc. in 1940.
