Martha McClellan
2015 Katharine Thomas Cary Medal
For delightfully spreading the love of flower arranging through mentoring and educating others.
Proposed by: The Knoxville Garden Club, Zone IX
By 1988 Martha McClellan was immersed in flower arranging and took over the leadership role as the Flower Show Chairman for The Knoxville Garden Club Flower Show, which she has done several times since. Throughout her “career” she has held many positions in her club and Zone IX, including being President of The Knoxville Garden Club. She travels quite a bit as a GCA Judge along with presenting a variety of flower arranging programs to GCA clubs and other groups. Martha’s award winning floral designs and arranging tips appear regularly in the GCA by Design magazine. While on the way to becoming a flower arranging guru she has won numerous blue ribbons and Best in the Shows. Additionally, she has won her club’s Medal of Merit, the Zone IX Flower Arrangement Award and the Barbara Spaulding Cramer Award. From Seattle to Philadelphia and many places in between, Martha has taught those with dull clippers and those with sharp one’s about the mechanics, the strategy and the beauty of arranging flowers for a party, the church altar, events, flower shows or simply for oneself. Her life is one of modeling and educating her love and passion of flowers. Martha’s enthusiasm is infectious, her knowledge is brilliant and her curiosity is never ending. She simply makes flower arranging happen.
The Katharine Thomas Cary Medal is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of floral design education.
