Richard Hampton Jenrette

Richard Hampton Jenrette

2017 Historic Preservation Medal

In recognition of unequaled contributions to historic preservation through leadership, scholarship, and impeccable restorations of historically significant properties and their surrounding landscapes and gardens; and for exceptional vision in establishing Classical American Homes Preservation Trust.

Proposed by: Green Spring Valley Garden Club, Zone VI

A self-proclaimed “house-aholic” for 45 years, Richard Hampton Jenrette has owned and restored twelve classical houses, furnished them with American antiques, and inspired the preservation of historic houses throughout America. HRH The Prince of Wales wrote “... his admirers have described Dick as a one-person National Trust for Historic Preservation." In 1993 Dick established Classical American Homes Preservation Trust with the mission "to preserve, protect, and open to the public examples of classical American residential architecture, surrounding landscapes and trails, as well as fine and decorative arts of the first half of the 19th century." These estates will be donated to Classical American Homes Preservation Trust with endowments to secure their future. During a long career on Wall Street, Dick founded (1959) and later served as chair of the board (1974-1996) of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc. He is the former chair of the board and CEO of The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States.

The Historic Preservation Medal is awarded for outstanding work in the field of preservation and/or restoration of historic gardens or buildings of national importance.

The Historic Preservation Medal was designed in 1973 by Joseph Kiselewski of New York City and endowed by two GCA club members: Elizabeth “Betty” Work Kirby (Mrs. Leonard Kirby: 1910–2007), Jupiter Island Garden Club, Zone VIII, and Erin Bain Leddy Jones (Mrs. John Leddy Jones: 1896–1974), attorney, author, and lay expert on environmental issues, who was a member of Founders Garden Club of Dallas, Zone IX. Originally awarded in 1973, it was the intention of the donors that non-members or groups receive preference in the awarding of this medal.
