Robin Karson
Robin Karson
2022 Sarah Chapman Francis Medal
Proposed by: a member of Millbrook Garden Club, Zone III
Robin Karson, author and publisher, has championed the history of American landscape design for thirty years. While researching her seminal book on landscape architect Fletcher Steele in the late 1980’s, Robin realized how little was known about America’s landscape history beyond a few academic departments. In 1992, she launched the Library of American Landscape History (LALH), a think tank for the sharing of information and a publisher for scholarly works on landscape architecture. Under Robin’s leadership, LALH has published 42 books, becoming the leading publisher of books that advance the study and practice of American landscape architecture. LALH reaches a wider audience through its annual news magazine VIEW, through exhibitions about landscape architecture, and via five documentary films on the LALH website and YouTube. Additionally, it serves as a resource for landscape architecture students. Landscape historian Robin Karson has provided a needed resource for scholars, increased the scholarly literature, and fostered the history of American landscape design as a serious academic discipline.
The Sarah Chapman Francis Medal is awarded for outstanding literary achievement related to any aspect of The Garden Club of America's interests.
The Sarah Chapman Francis Medal was endowed in 1964 by Priscilla Beacham Stanton (Mrs. Otis Cook Stanton), The Garden Club of Buzzards Bay, Zone I, in memory of her mother, Sarah “Sallie” Dimon Chapman Francis (1874-1962), GCA member-at-large. The medal was created by Allison Macomber based on a design by Susanne S. Underwood, Garden Club of Buzzards Bay.
