White House Gardens Symposium To Focus on Beatrix Farrand

April 10, 2019

A fascinating discussion on her gardens and legacy

Beatrix Farrand, GCA advisor and recipient of the 1947 GCA Achievement Medal, will be the focus of an upcoming seminar sponsored by the White House Historical Association and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation on May 2 in Washington, DC.

The program will include clips from a new documentary on Farrand, narrated by GCA Honorary Member Lynden Miller, and discussions about Farrand’s garden legacy as well as the legacy of Bunny Mellon. GCA president Dede Petri and Garden Club of Somerset Hills member Mac Griswold, co-author of The Golden Age of American Gardens: Proud Owners, Private Estates, with Eleanor Weller Reade will participate.

The Garden Club of America has a history of involvement with the White House Gardens. GCA honorary member William Seale is the author of The White House Garden. 2019 National Medalist Marta McDowell, member of the GC of Madison, is also a White House gardens expert and author of All the Presidents’ Gardens, a lively book about garden history that mentions the superb assistance of GCA archivists and relies on illustrations from the GCA’s own Archives of American Gardens.  To learn more about the Symposium and to register, please CLICK HERE.
