In 2007, Dr. Ari Novy, a Ph.D candidate at Rutgers University, was awarded the GCA’s Caroline Thorn Kissel Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship which promotes environmental studies in the state of New Jersey. While at Rutgers, Dr. Novy taught undergraduate and graduate courses on a variety of horticultural subjects and won several awards for his research, teaching, and outreach excellence. He currently serves as president and CEO of the San Diego Botanic Garden.
Before joining San Diego Botanic Garden, Dr. Novy was chief scientist at the Leichtag Foundation and former executive director of the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C. At the U.S. Botanic Garden, Novy sat on the executive leadership team of the U.S. Architect of the Capitol, which is responsible for maintaining the campuses of the Capitol, Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court. He has also served on task forces and advisory panels for many diverse plant protection and conservation groups including the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
After his recent move to San Diego, Dr. Novy shared, “The GCA is such a wonderful organization, that I hold with deep affection. As a recipient of a GCA graduate student scholarship, I feel the GCA has been with me my entire career, helping me to achieve all I can in the service of gardening and horticulture."
The 37-acre San Diego Botanic Garden has extensive collections of Mediterranean climate plants, rare bamboo groves, desert gardens, California native plants, and award-winning children’s gardens. It continues to thrive under Dr. Novy’s capable leadership
