Great American Outdoors Act Passes in the Senate

June 22, 2020

“National Parks are Irreplaceable Treasures”

Last week, the U.S. Senate passed the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) with bipartisan support. It is considered the most important conservation legislation since the Land and Water Conservation Fund was created in 1964. The Garden Club of America believes that our country’s national parks are irreplaceable treasures whose value is incalculable. The GCA was a significant force along the bill’s journey to passage. Read the GCA position papers on Clean Water and National Parks as well as papers on other topics.

The GAOA will fully fund the LWCF annually at $900 million and will provide $9.5 billion over the next five years to federal programs and agencies to begin addressing the deep backlog of maintenance projects in our national parks.

Step two is to move the bill through the House of Representatives. The GCA will continue its efforts on the House side for the passage of the GAOA without amendments and with full, permanent funding of LWCF. For more information about the bill and its congressional status click here.
