Litchfield Garden Club Celebrates Earth Day

A Tree-Planting Ceremony

The Litchfield Garden Club (LGC), Litchfield, CT, has a long history with Earth Day, an annual international event held on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. LGC celebrated the inaugural event in 1970 by planting a tree on North Street. 

Since that date, LGC members have organized various Earth Day events every year. One long-time member organized the first Earth Day parade in Litchfield and continues to show her passion for Earth Day by organizing various ceremonies and activities each year.

To celebrate Earth Day 2021, the club’s conservation chair organized a tree-planting ceremony. Despite the unexpected April snow showers and freezing temperature, members planted four crabapple trees at the Tapping Reeve Meadow. The meadow, which is maintained by the Litchfield Historical Society, is a community resource with landscape elements that would have been found on the site, and in Litchfield, from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Three of the trees were donated by LGC, with the fourth donated by the historical society.

The four crabapple trees are symbolic. One tree honors Earth Day 2020, since the LGC’s planned activities were postponed due to pandemic restrictions. One tree honors Earth Day 2021. One tree is a memorial dedicated to LGC members lost over the past year and for those who suffered losses due to Covid-19. The fourth tree was planted in tribute to first responders who have served dutifully during the pandemic.
