The GCA's 2021 Floral Design Conference

December 09, 2021

Celebrations

Following in the footsteps of two previous virtual conferences, the Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference and the Conservation Study Conference, the 2021 Floral Design Conference Celebrations brought club members together, virtually, for a day of insightful instruction, fresh ideas, updates on sustainable practices, and astounding winter arrangements from some of the greatest names in floral arts.

The event began with Joseph Massie’s presentation “Seasonality: An Indulgence in the Colours, Textures, and Scents of the Festive Season” followed by a live Q&A. Next up was Laura Iarocci, AIFD, with “Wreaths, Southern Style.” New this year, attendees were able to design two wreaths along with the floral artist followed by a live Q&A.

The conference resumed in the afternoon with Daniel Santamaria’s presentation, “Winter Wonderful, 3.0” followed by a live Q&A. A special closing presentation by Hitomi Gilliam, AIFD, on “Inspirations on Festive Winter Design” brought the floral design conference to a creative close, leaving attendees with plenty of ideas for the season.

The GCA made a rapid pivot beginning in late spring 2020 from destination-based, in-person events to virtual gatherings. Teams of volunteers have been engaged in learning strategies for creating and presenting educational content for member clubs in this new way. Opening events up virtually — now to ten-fold the attendance of past years — has been a silver-lining during challenging times.
