Pathways From the Palisades to the Pinelands

The Garden Club of America’s 2022 Annual Meeting was held in Parsippany, New Jersey on April 29-30. This year’s meeting was a hybrid event with limited in-person attendance as well as a full schedule of virtual attendance events open to all GCA club members. 

Attendees had a chance to participate in a live broadcast of the business meeting highlighting creativity, collaboration, community, connections, and the GCA’s forward focus. In addition to remarks from GCA president, Debbie Oliver, attendees heard from two former GCA scholars, Cindy Zipf, executive director of Clean Ocean Action and Michael Dosmann, keeper of the living collections at Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. The afternoon offered the opportunity to participate in GCA Pathways to Community, an in-person and virtual workshop designed to help open pathways to effective and achievable ways to garden, create, advocate, and strategically plan, all while building community.

The following day, GCA club members were invited to meet the 2022 GCA Honorary members in live, interactive Q&A; to experience virtual garden tours showcasing why New Jersey is called the “Garden State”; and finally to watch a live broadcast of the awards ceremony honoring the 2022 GCA Medalists.

This year’s flower show Pathways is now available as an online experience providing the opportunity for the public and GCA club members across the country to enjoy, virtually, photographs of the winners as well as videos of the flower show. The purpose of a GCA flower show is three-fold: to set standards of artistic and horticultural excellence, to broaden knowledge of conservation, horticulture, floral design, and other related areas, and to share the beauty of a show. Flower shows combine artistic vision, horticultural mastery, engineering, and sophisticated craftsmanship to create a brilliant display of beauty. They also serve to educate about conservation and environmental issues.
