Temple University’s Landscape Architecture and Horticulture students were awarded the Bulkley Medal of the Garden Club of America at the 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show by GCA President, Marilyn Donahue and, GCA Chairman of Flower Shows, Jan Sweeney. This prestigious award recognizes an exhibit of exceptional merit in horticulture, botany, or conservation that effectively conveys an important message to the public.
The Bulkley Medal, first designed in 1938 and officially endowed in 1963, is awarded at major non-GCA flower shows to exhibits that enhance public understanding of plant sciences and environmental stewardship. Temple’s winning entry, “Reflections on Regeneration: An Artful Response to Our Changing Environment,” was praised for its seamless integration of design, education, and ecological awareness. It was also amongst steep competition as the entire class of exhibitors received a commendation from the judges.
With a blend of innovative materials, carefully selected plants, and interactive elements, the exhibit encouraged visitors to reflect on themes of transformation and sustainability. The students meticulously planned every detail, from forcing over 1,200 plants to designing an immersive space that balanced natural beauty with modern design elements. Their ability to translate complex environmental concepts into a visually compelling and educational experience set their work apart.
