There’s something timeless about creating your own holiday garland: the scent of evergreens, the quiet rhythm of layering greens, and the satisfaction of weaving beauty with your own hands. This season, create a fresh evergreen garland by following these simple instructions:
- Gather your materials: a mix of 18-inch pieces of arborvitae, western cedar, noble and silver fir, bay leaves, cypress, seeded eucalyptus, and magnolia (for varied forms, textures, and contrast). Other tools needed are: heavy green twine, florist paddle wire, decorative ribbon, berries, and pine cones.
- Measure your space and cut a length of twine about two feet longer than needed.
- Anchor the twine under a table or between two chairs to keep it taut.
- Sort your greens into piles. Mark the twine’s center, then secure a length of paddle wire.
- Working from each end toward the center, start with a full, sturdy branch–such as noble fir–wind the wire snugly (3-4 turns) to hold it in place.
- Layer small bundles, wrapping tightly as you go, alternating the direction of the greens on both sides of the twine to keep the flow natural and lush.
- When the two halves meet, tie off your wire and disguise the connection with a bow, ribbon, or cluster of berries.
- Mist your garland lightly every few days and display it away from direct heat or sunlight.
Draped across a mantel or wound along a banister, your handmade garland, woven one fragrant
branch at a time, celebrates the season’s beauty by bringing nature’s magic indoors.
