Something unexpected has been happening at a hospital in Athens, Georgia. Every few months, The Junior Ladies’ Garden Club (JLGC) arrives at the hospital with their pop-up Flower Cart. JLGC members unload tables, clippers, buckets of flowers, pitchers of water, and vases. A long line of patients, hospital visitors, and hospital staff quickly forms as participants await their opportunity to create an easy, attractive flower arrangement at no cost. These arrangements brighten the days of patients and families at the hospital, and of staff who may have had a particularly hard shift.
In 2022, a JLGC member experienced a similar pop-up at a hospital in nearby Atlanta. This inspired her to bring the idea to the attention of her club president. Realizing that local florists would have unused flowers following Valentine’s Day, JLGC was able to secure surplus flower donations from local florists. The first JLGC Flower Cart arrived in the lobby of Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital right after Valentine’s Day in February, 2025. The event was a success, and JLGC members were hooked.
JLCG members have perfected the process. Donations are now secured not only from JLGC member gardens and local florists, but also from local flower growers, grocers, and floral wholesalers. As the executive director of the Piedmont Athens Regional Foundation has said, the Junior Ladies “have it down to a science.” Flower Carts even have appeared at a local assisted living community.
The Flower Cart brings the joy of nature to all involved. Patients and hospital staff benefit, but so do JLGC members. As one JLGC member noted, “We’ve planted trees and built gardens, but as far as immediate satisfaction, this is so easy and positive.”
