March 19, 2026

The Garden Club of America mourns the loss of Joan Marie (Hogg) George, president of the GCA from 2009-2011, who died on January 7, 2026. A 50-plus-year member of the Halten Garden Club in Maryland, Joan’s tireless contributions touched nearly every aspect of the GCA. She served on a dozen committees and received many awards.

Beyond the GCA, Joan was involved with national parks and several plant societies. Joan renewed GCA's partnership with the National Park Service for conservation projects such as invasive plant removal and rare plant surveys at Acadia and Congaree parks, and Big Thicket Preserve. An accomplished daffodil grower, she was an exhibitor, lecturer, and judge with the American Daffodil Society.

Under Joan’s leadership as GCA president, the GCA’s Communications Committee was formed to facilitate and foster outreach both within and outside of the GCA.  Joan commented in 2021: “What I love most about the GCA: The opportunity to associate and learn from people who share a passion for horticulture and conservation.”

Former GCA president Maryjo Garre described Joan as being "gifted with intelligence, poise, an extremely gracious manner and a wonderful sense of humor.”  Joan leaves behind a legacy of elegance, creativity, and a love of nature.
