Garden Club of America Flower Shows: More Than Beautiful Flowers

Think you know flower shows? Think again!
Attend a GCA flower show, and you are certain to see brilliant floral designs, pristine horticulture specimens, stunning photographs, and dazzling botanical arts. But take a second look. You will also find a wealth of educational information about conservation, native plants, invasive species, pollinators, and more.
One of the primary purposes of any GCA flower show is education. At Kaleidoscope in Portland, Oregon, attendees learned the ways in which native plants have supported human health and well-being in the Pacific Northwest from the Pre-Columbian era to the present. Earlier this year, Atlanta’s Heirlooms showcased the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s work to preserve endangered orchids around the world. Houston’s Florescence educated attendees on horticulture and landscape design relating to the local gardens of Bayou Bend and Rienzi. In Memphis, Gloriosa exhibitors reported on the importance of nurturing of the microcosms in their own backyards. And at Imagine That!, in Honolulu, attendees learned how the cultivation of native trees is playing a vital role in the recovery from the devastating 2023 wildfire in Lahaina, Maui.
