Teachers engage students at four public charter schools by weaving gardening and nutrition into lesson plans for everything from science to civics. Measuring cups in the teaching kitchen bring fractions to life, and writing poems about garden critters supports language skills, explores the concept of beneficial insects, and introduces the garden as a place to clear the mind.

Students, staff, and volunteers tend the gardens throughout the year, and everyone enjoys getting a taste of the results. In fact, 96% of students report trying new foods, and parents report greater interest in eating nutritious foods at home.

The New Orleans Town Gardeners, Inc., continue to support the nationally acclaimed program through garden workdays and grants for special projects, including butterfly gardens to increase the magic of pollinators and shade structures for outdoor learning on warm New Orleans days.  Their enduring partnership reflects the GCA’s commitment to cultivating environmental awareness and inspiring the next generation through hands-on garden education.

Happy birthday, ESYNOLA! Here’s to many more years inspiring curiosity in the garden!
