The GCA Praised for Protecting the Environment

In the news...

Save The Bay, the largest regional organization working to protect, restore and celebrate the San Francisco Bay, recently featured The Garden Club of America in its blog. Executive Director David Lewis was quick to praise the GCA for “its perseverance protecting the environment.” He went on to share: “Garden clubs have a long history of involvement in conservation. They made a huge push to advocate for the creation of the Clean Water Act, and their members have continued to be leading advocates in local communities.”

Save The Bay was the 2018 recipient of The Garden Club of America’s Cynthia Pratt Laughlin Medal for outstanding achievement in environmental protection and the maintenance of the quality of life. Many organizations in the Bay area, including six local GCA garden clubs, have collaborated with Save The Bay, creating “a model for others fighting to protect natural habitats in urban environments,” noted Karen Gilhuly of Woodside-Atherton Garden Club, in a story published by the GCA’s ConWatch.

Save The Bay’s blog details the partnership and highlights the remarks of Lewis at the GCA Annual Meeting in San Francisco where he said he was especially grateful to be recognized by the GCA as “garden clubs really are kindred spirits to Save The Bay because they appreciate – and preserve – natural beauty.”
