Good News! Washington’s View Saved

October 17, 2018

The Garden Club of America celebrates news from Mount Vernon that the iconic view from George Washington’s beloved home has been saved. In a statement released on October 16, 2018, Dominion Energy announced it will not construct a natural gas transmission compressor station across the river from George Washington’s historic home.

The Garden Club of America joined a Coalition to Save the Viewshed in June, opposing Dominion Energy’s plans, along with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Cultural Landscape Foundation and others. Members of the Coalition supported Mount Vernon in opposing the development plan and underscoring the need to protect this historic viewshed for the American people.

In 2010, The Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, which owns and oversees the historic property, received the GCA’s Historic Preservation Medal. The honor recognized the Association’s visionary preservation efforts, including their ground-breaking protection of the viewshed.
