Bookworm Gardens, GCA 2008 Founders Fund Finalist Featured at the US Botanic Garden on Capitol Hill

Sheboygan, Wisconsin’s Bookworm Gardens, a 2008 GCA Founders Fund Finalist and GCA grant recipient, is among 20 gardens currently highlighted at the United States Botanic Garden on Capitol Hill. The Gardens Across America exhibit, open through October, celebrates the rich diversity of more than 600 public gardens in the United States. 

Bookworm Gardens’ vignette, which brings to life the children’s book The Magic School Bus Plants Seeds, joins notable public gardens in the exhibit including the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, North Carolina; the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, Florida; and the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, Colorado. 

Bookworm Gardens, inspired by children's literature, the natural world, and the imagination, is a 7.5 acre playful botanic garden. Designed to enrich the mind, body, and spirit of the young and young at heart, the garden, explains Pat Schutt of Town and Country Garden Club, was made possible by the support of the Sheboygan community, Town and Country Garden Club, and The Garden Club of America. Tripadvisor.com lists Bookworm Gardens as Sheboygan’s top attraction.

“Bookworm Gardens became a reality due to the incredible efforts of our community,” explained Sandy Livermore, Bookworm Founder. “We strive to bring joy to our visitors through the celebration of literature and nature.” 

Bookworm Gardens’ Magic School Bus display features a whimsical school bus with vibrant butterfly wings zooming through a garden bed that bursts in a rainbow of color. Vibrant orange Adirondack chairs, within eyeshot of the nation’s Capitol, entice visitors to read and an official (Little Free Library) with children’s books invites the young and young at heart to “Read It. Love It, Return It.” Throughout its run, the USBG will offer programs, workshops, lectures, and tours related to the exhibit.
