A Sampling of GCA Authors

With activities limited due to COVID-19, it’s a perfect time to escape into our gardens, take a walk in our neighborhoods, and explore books about nature and gardens. What better place to start than with a sampling of books authored by club members and honorary members of The Garden Club of America?

Listen to the Land: Creating a Southern Woodland Garden, by Louise Agee Wrinkle

Listen to the Land is an engaging, informative, and poignant memoir of a life spent tending one particular property, a woodland oasis in Alabama. Louise Agee Wrinkle grew up on this land, returned to it in mid-life, and has, for the last 30 years, tended it with care and creativity. Louise Wrinkle is a member of the Little Garden Club of Birmingham.

Plants in Garden History, by Penelope Hobhouse

Hobhouse, a GCA honorary member, is a garden writer, designer, historian, and lecturer. She has designed gardens all over the world, including an herb garden at the New York Botanical Garden, a garden for Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, at Walmer Castle in Kent, as well as the Royal Horticultural Society’s “Country Garden” at Wisley. Her other publications include: Colour in Your Garden, Penelope Hobhouse on Gardening, Penelope Hobhouse’s Garden Designs, and Penelope Hobhouse’s Natural Planting.

The Greater Perfection, The Story of the Gardens at Quatre Vent, by Francis H. Cabot

An honorary member and friend of The Garden Club of America, Cabot was a self-taught horticulturist who created two of the most celebrated gardens in North America. The first, Stonecrop Gardens in New York, features 12 acres of woodlands, grasses, bulbs, alpine plants and rock gardens. The second, Les Quatre Vents (the Four Winds), on his family’s estate in Quebec, is widely considered one of the most ambitious private gardens in North America, if not the world.
