Middle Schoolers Create Plant Superheroes

This spring, Seed Your Future’s “Plants to the Rescue: Plant Mash-Up! Contest” inspired thousands of middle-schoolers across the country to imagine and illustrate a multi-plant hybrid that would solve a community problem. Debra Oliver, GCA first vice president and Seed Your Future board member, helped judge the entries which included illustrations and essays describing the challenges and the proposed plant-based solutions. The 7th grade grand prize winner took on the issues of carbon dioxide and water pollution, definitely a contender for Superhero status.

The Plant Mash-Up! Contest was an exciting way to reach youth through Seed Your Future’s BLOOM! campaign. Students chose a diverse array of community issues for their Mash-Up creations. Among them were hunger, homelessness, pollution, erosion, health, and even how to protect gardens from pesky critters... and the results were impressive!

Seed Your Future, along with the GCA and more than 200 collaborative partners, have helped reach over a million kids with its BLOOM! campaign. Plants are critical to the future of the planet, but absent from the minds of American youth. Zero percent of today’s middle school children have ever heard of the word horticulture. The national campaign BLOOM! was launched in 2018 to excite young people about the power of plants and ensure horticulture - along with the millions who depend on it - thrives well into the future.
