Christmas Greens Flash Brightens Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville

Transforming the Nancy Artis and Doug Caton Park

‘Twas right before Christmas and all through the park...sixteen members of Albemarle Garden Club  (AGC) arrived at the Barry and Bill Battle Building at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in early December with arms brimming with greens, garlands, bows, ornaments, and a live tree. They swiftly went about transforming the Nancy Artis and Doug Caton Park into a festive display designed to brighten the entrance to the children’s hospital. With the whimsical bronze animal statues as the festive centerpiece, AGC members creatively decorated with a child’s eye in mind.

The animals were dressed with garlands, ribbons, greens, candy canes, and unexpected surprises, including wrapped presents and stuffed stockings. The decorated live tree was donated by Grelen Nursery in Somerset, Virginia and will be planted at the Booker T. Washington Bog Garden in Charlottesville after the holidays.

AGC, through its Civic Projects Committee, saw an opportunity to create this joyful display for the hospitalized children and their families, the healthcare workers, and the Charlottesville community. The hope was that all who walked or drove by the corner of Main Street and Jefferson Park Avenue would smile upon seeing the unexpected beauty and cheer during these challenging times.

It was especially touching to have children, family members, and healthcare workers watch the transformation from hospital windows. Mrs. Barry Battle and Ms. Nancy Artis were present to cheer the team on and share in the celebration.
