Bounty of the Garden Renews a Holiday Tradition

Decorating the Christmas Tree at Chester County Hospital

The West Chester Garden Club, in West Chester, PA, knew that it had to do something extra special when decorating the Christmas tree in the lobby of the Chester County Hospital. For the past three years, the club’s thirty-year partnership with the hospital had been interrupted due to a multi-phase construction project. With COVID-19 restrictions dampening spirits, club members thought of a wonderful way to raise hopes — by bringing the bounty harvested from their gardens into the newly renovated lobby. Allium, pinecone wreaths, okra pods, and hydrangeas were all painted a striking silver. Other ornaments included mini tools and seed packs. The holiday tree is resplendent, bringing beauty and joy to everyone.

In addition to the longstanding tradition of decorating this Christmas tree, the garden club maintains pollinator and native plant gardens, has restored an historic garden, and provides holiday decorations at the entrance to a cemetery and a local library. “Support to the community is one of the primary functions of our club, and what better way than to create a tradition of offering beauty where it is needed and highly valued,” said current WCGC club president.
