The 2022 Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference: Jewels of Nature

September 28, 2022

September 19-22, 2022

After two years of virtual conferences, GCA club members were thrilled to gather in-person to discuss their love of gardening and explore Boston’s botanical offerings. The GCA’s 2022 Shirley Meneice Horticulture Conference Jewels of Nature featured inspirational horticultural experts, landmark locations, and cutting-edge garden design.

The Meneice is an annual event typically held at a different botanical garden each year. The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University served as this year’s primary hosting venue for the conference and Dr. William (Ned) Friedman, the arboretum’s director, addressed the attendees.

Attendees also visited Garden in the Woods, the flagship of the Native Plant Trust in Framingham, and the Gardens at Elm Bank, headquarter of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society in Dover.

Workshops ranged from processing seeds to creating sustainable urban meadows. Tours of the Arnold Arboretum’s Horticultural Library as well as its Bonsai and Penjing collection—featuring specimens more than 250 years old—delighted many. GCA photography experts were on hand to teach attendees how to artfully photograph trees.

The ongoing celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Frederick Law Olmsted continued with a presentation by performance artist Gerry Wright and a tour of the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, Fairsted.

Next up is the Conservation Study Conference to be held virtually on November 9, 2022. All GCA club members are welcome to attend. Future virtual conferences will be dedicated to floral design, garden history & design, and photography. The GCA’s 2023 National Affairs and Legislation Conference as well as its annual meeting will be held in person with remote attendance options.
