In Memoriam: Alice Walker Casey Mathews, 36th President of The Garden Club of America

Alice Walker Casey Mathews, GCA president from 2005-2007, died peacefully on March 7, 2023. She had been a member of Garden Club of Nashville since 1982.

Alice held GCA leadership positions for over 25 years including director; Zone IX chair; chair of the Admissions Committee; and zone representative on the Nominating and Long Range Planning committees. She was a member of the Policy Research, Finance, Strategic Planning, and Centennial committees. She was named a horticulture judge in 1998 and Judge Emeritus in 2014. Alice was awarded the Club Appreciation Award in 1995, Creative Leadership Award in 1996, and Medal of Merit in 2005. She was a member of the Board of Associates.

Alice pursued service in every aspect of her life. She was a deeply committed leader in many Nashville nonprofit and civic organizations including the Historic Travellers Rest Historic House Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, Tennessee Performing Arts Center, and the City of Belle Meade Municipal Planning Commission.

Alice was a lifelong learner with a sharp intellect. She will be remembered for her leadership skills, graciousness, positive attitude, and her love of the GCA and Garden Club of Nashville.
