August 09, 2023

Eighty-six scholars awarded a record $402,500

The Garden Club of America has awarded a record $402,500 for the 2023-2024 year to recognize the academic endeavors of 86 scholars—a banner year for GCA’s Scholarship Committee. Undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate studies in areas including pollinator research and landscape architecture will allow students to pursue their unique passions. This year, scholars’ field studies include nut trees, seagrass ecosystems, and the impact of dams on the American landscape.

GCA's scholarships cover projects in the fields of botany, coastal wetlands, ecological restoration, desert studies, garden history and design, international studies, landscape architecture, conservation horticulture, horticulture, native plant studies, native bird habitat, pollinator research, environmental studies, and urban forestry.

Since 1928 when the first GCA scholarship, the Rome Prize Fellowship in Landscape Architecture, was established, fifteen hundred scholars have been funded. The GCA offers twenty-nine merit-based scholarships.

The GCA Scholarship Chair explains that GCA scholars will be among tomorrow’s “frontline botanists, horticulturists, landscape architects, educators, and public garden administrators (who) seek to solve the problems that the  GCA has identified.”
