The 2023 Conservation Study Conference was held on beautiful Jekyll Island, GA from November 7-10. GCA club members from around the country gathered to learn about the hundred miles of shoreline-– including a third of all the remaining salt marshes in the Eastern United States–that make up Georgia’s Golden Coast. Through presentations and excursions, attendees delved into understanding the conservation efforts taking place in the area and how they can translate these programs for their own communities.
Speakers included scientist Dr. Dionne Hoskins-Brown, naturalist Stacia Hendricks, author Dr. Paul Bolster, historian Paul Pressly, coastal preservation advocate Megan Desrosiers, and Jason Lee, Program Manager of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Landscape painter Philip Juras shared how his desire to understand and conserve healthy national environments shows up in his work.
Located halfway between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL, Jekyll Island excursions included boating, kayaking, and walking excursions to become more familiar with the landscape and wildlife of the area. These opportunities to explore outside the lecture hall shed further light on the environmental wonders and challenges of this remarkable spot.
