Millbrook Garden Club Member Receives Major Preservation Award

Millbrook Garden Club member Arete Swartz Warren was recently recognized by the Library of American Landscape History as their 2023 Preservation Hero. Through significant leadership roles in The Garden Club of America and over a dozen other notable organizations, Ms. Warren has made extensive contributions to historic preservation, education, and philanthropy. Her work in preserving landscapes, buildings, and art in New York and beyond is unparalleled.

Arete has been instrumental in changing perceptions of American landscape history, notably through her extensive research and writings on orangeries and greenhouses. In 1985, Warren co authored the scholarly book, Glass Houses: A History of Greenhouses, Orangeries, and Conservatories. In 2013, she curated an exhibition of rare garden books found in the world-class collection of the GCA. The exhibition catalog included biographies of dozens of botanical illustrators, many of them women.

In 2016, she was awarded the GCA National Achievement Medal “in recognition of an inspiring visionary, whose erudition, formidable energy, and perseverance stimulate the love and knowledge of books and gardening.”

Her leadership roles in prestigious preservation and art institutions underscore her significant impact in these fields, making her a true inspiration in the world of historic gardening and preservation. Congratulations Arete! An honor well deserved.
