Purpose
To encourage studies and careers in the environmental field, with the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience beyond the regular course of study.
Education
Open to college undergraduates for summer study following their freshman, sophomore, or junior year.
Eligibility
Open to college undergraduates for summer study following the freshman, sophomore, or junior year. Open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in a U.S.-based institution. Due to IRS restrictions, GCA is unable to fund awards for international applicants.
Provisions
Provides financial assistance of $3000 to one student annually for field work, research, or classroom work. (Award amounts were increased from $1500 in 2007.) Work may award academic credit but should be in addition to required courses.
Selection
Selection is by members of the GCA Scholarship Committee.
History
In 1998 the family and friends of Mary Trainer Carothers established a scholarship fund as a memorial to the well-loved member of the Noanett (Massachusetts) Garden Club. “Bootsie” Carothers was known for her love for gardening and the environment, both of which extended to local and state horticultural and conservation associations. The Carothers Scholarship achieved full funding in June, 2005.

See application and instructions. Applications must be received at GCA Headquarters in New York City by February 5 preceding the summer of study. Note that applications for this scholarship, the Clara Carter Higgins Scholarship, the GCA Awards for Summer Environmental Studies, and the Elizabeth Gardner Norweb Scholarship are considered together. Interested students should submit only one application.
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY ONE GCA SCHOLARSHIP, FELLOWSHIP OR AWARD MAY BE APPLIED FOR ANNUALLY.

The Mary T. Carothers Summer Environmental Studies Scholarship Fund is managed by the GCA.
