Purpose
To encourage the understanding, development and use of underutilized native plants. Established to encourage the development of research, documentation, and teaching skills in the field of horticulture.
Education
Open to college undergraduates or graduate students, advanced degree candidates, or non-degree seeking students above the high school level.
Eligibility
Open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who are currently and actively enrolled in a U.S.-based institution. Due to IRS restrictions, GCA is unable to fund awards for international applicants.
Provisions
Funds one or more scholarships annually at a minimum of $3000 to support study at an accredited college, university, or major botanic garden or arboretum. Research, studies, or projects may include, but are not restricted to, plant propagation, and the acquisition of skills for working with native plant collections, including techniques for incorporating them in managed landscapes.
Selection
Selection is by a committee chaired by a Scholarship Vice Chair who may invite others to participate in selection who, by virtue of their background in underutilized native plants, may be a valuable resource to the committee.
History
Established in 2017 in cooperation with the family of Montine McDaniel Freeman utilizing surplus funds from the Montine M. Freeman Medal account.
