Purpose

To promote conservation of rare and endangered flora in the United States through the programs of the Center for Plant Conservation, Escondido, California.

Level of Education

Open to graduate students.

Eligibility

Open to graduate students in biology, horticulture, or a related field. Preference is given to students whose projects focus on the endangered flora of the Carolinas and Southeastern United States. Open to U.S. Citizens and permanent residents who are currently and actively enrolled in a U.S. - based institution. Due to IRS restrictions, GCA is unable to fund awards for international applicants.

Provisions

Provides one annual research grant of up to $4500, regarded as compensation for work at a botanical garden by the student, who jointly serves the mission of the Center For Plant Conservation and their curricular studies through the study and conservation of rare and endangered plants. 

Selection

Selection is by the Science Advisory Council of the Center for Plant Conservation and is approved by the GCA Scholarship Committee.

History

The Beattie Fellowship was established to honor Catherine H. Beattie, GCA president (1981-1983), outstanding arranger, and gardener devoted to the preservation of wildflowers.

See Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship application guidelines. Completed applications must be received at the Center for Plant Conservation in Escondido, CA, by January 31, preceding the period of study. PLEASE NOTE: ONLY ONE GCA SCHOLARSHIP, FELLOWSHIP OR AWARD MAY BE APPLIED FOR ANNUALLY.

Fund

The Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship Fund is managed by the GCA.
