History

Following a Zone Meeting hosted by her garden club, the Monroe (Louisiana) Garden Study League, Caroline Brown (Mrs. Douglas C.) expressed her interest in funding a summer scholarship in the field of medicinal botany. With the help of Dr. James Miller from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the GCA Scholarship Committee proposed a summer scholarship to include field study, laboratory study, or special coursework in medicinal botany. The fund was originally called the Caroline Brown Fund but Mrs. Brown preferred to call it the Zeller Medicinal Botany Fund to honor deceased members of her family. The scholarship was offered for the first time in 2003 for study during the summer of 2004. Caroline Brown is a former member of the GCA House Committee and was responsible for Fine Arts and Acquisitions.
