2013 The Anne S. Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany
Dr. Abdolbaset Ghorbani Dahaneh, of Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, will research the development of a next-generation sequencing molecular identification system to curb the illegal trade in orchid tubers (Orchidaceae rhizoatous) for medicinal product sale in Iran. His project seeks to create a DNA bar-coding method that will allow rapid, reliable identification of orchid tubers. He will conduct field and survey work in Iran to determine which species are being used most and collect a range of samples. This research could impact wild orchid populations by protecting and discouraging the collection of endangered or toxic species.
The Anne S. Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany
To protect, preserve, and expand knowledge about the medicinal use of plants, thus preventing the disappearance of plants with therapeutic potential. Providing this research opportunity for botanists can, in turn, assist medical science to develop therapies that improve the quality of life of patients and develop life-saving medicines.
